SS 321 / UNS S32100 is a basic austenitic 18/8 steel (Grade 304) stabilized by a titanium addition. The titanium stabilizes the alloy against intergranular corrosion after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation range of 427–816°C (800–1500°F). SS 321 spiral wound gasket has higher creep and stress rupture properties than 304 and 304L gaskets, plus good low-temperature toughness. UNS S32205 / S31803, also called 2205 Duplex, is a 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, 5–6% nickel nitrogen-alloyed duplex stainless steel with high general, localized and stress corrosion resistance, high strength and excellent impact toughness. Duplex 2205 has good corrosion resistance superior to 316L or 317L austenitic stainless steel spiral wound gaskets in almost all corrosive media, higher corrosion and erosion fatigue properties, lower thermal expansion and higher thermal conductivity than austenitic grades. The yield strength of Duplex 2205 is about twice that of austenitic stainless steels, which allows a designer to save weight and makes the alloy more cost competitive than 316L or 317L. Incoloy 825 / UNS N08825 is an austenitic nickel-iron-chromium-molybdenum-copper alloy containing high levels of chromium, nickel, copper and molybdenum to provide high corrosion resistance in both moderately oxidizing and moderately reducing environments. The titanium addition stabilizes the alloy against intergranular corrosion. It offers exceptional resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion and general corrosion, with high temperature strength and high creep rupture strength. UNS S31803 has a ferritic-austenitic microstructure with approximately 40–50% ferrite in the annealed condition.
